Mainzer Cats

Picture
Mainzer cats were a series of humorous postcards which featured cats dressed as people.   They were created by Eugene Hartung who was German and have a very European flavor.  The earliest cards were published by Kunzli in Switzerland and later ones by Mainzer.  Recent print of the cards in Turkey and Thailand have devalued them to some extent.

At least one of the boy cats is always causing trouble and if you look hard (not in this picture) you can often find a mouse or two looking back at you.

If you plan to collect these cards looks for the earliest ones which were printed in Switzerland and Belgium.  Follow the link to see our collection of Mainzer Cats (plus Dogs & a few Mice)  Postcards .
